Dali and the umbrella stand

If anything is missing in our house we immediately check the umbrella stand. In fact, even when I’m not aware of anything being missing I like to check it at least once a day. The list of things that I have found in there is quite long and seemingly random; stapler, telephone handset, baby wipes, sippy cup, wallet, wooden spoon - just to name a few.

DSO often comments that kids are the original surrealists, and in relation to our umbrella stand I see his point. Dali himself, could not have juxtaposed objects more poignantly. Perhaps kids and great artists meet at a point where the kid is madly constructing reality and the artist is madly deconstructing?

Little Bro has caught onto the practice though. I observed him crawl all the way down the hall to deposit a chopstick in the umbrella stand today. I asked Big Sis why she put things in there - she replied simply “It’s funny mummy”, at least she didn’t say “It’s art”.
